How a Twitch Stream Inspired me to Write
How a Twitch stream inspired me to write is a very interesting story.
What is Twitch?
Twitch, originally known as Justin.TV is a major digital streaming service. Amazon acquired it in 2014. According to Statista, there were around 41.5 million Twitch users in the United States in 2020 and this figure is estimated to rise to 51.6 million by 2024. It originally focused almost entirely on video games but has since expanded to include streams dedicated to artwork, music, talk shows, TV series, and much more.
The Evolution of Twitch
Twitch may have been known for video game streaming, but it’s since expanded. The variety of categories added at the start of 2017, aims to appeal to a broader audience. The most-popular non-gaming category is IRL (In Real Life) which features streamers simply chatting with their viewers in real-time. Talk shows are another popular non-gaming category that contains a mix of live panel discussions, podcasts, and even professionally produced variety shows.
The talk show category is where I found my inspiration to write. Before we get into that story, there’s one last piece of information to paint the overall picture.
Is Twitch a Social Network?
If you asked this before 2017, I would have said no. Now, however, I would answer yes. Over the years since its acquisition, Twitch gradually introduced a variety of features that have helped it evolve into something that more closely resembles a social network such as Facebook. Twitch users can follow and DM (Direct Message) each other and each stream has its own unique chatroom where users can connect. The interactions on Twitch can lead to networking with others and long-lasting relationships.
My Twitch Story and Inspiration
One day, while home from work sick, I took it upon myself to browse some real-life streams, and I found a Mental Health talk show. The topic was on neurodivergent people, and the streamer and co-host were asking the viewers questions on various activities and how their Mental Health disorders affected their lifestyle. I had replied that I had generalized anxiety disorder and I always found it hard to focus on tasks, especially in school or at work. We talked for thirty minutes and it felt wonderful to be heard, even if it was a group of strangers.
Being open about what I was going through, to strangers online, not only felt freeing but inspiring. Knowing that I was able to discuss my disorder in a comfortable environment made me realize that I could discuss my other thoughts, experiences, and knowledge in writing.
Mentality of Mo was created from that inspiration.
Reflecting on that stream and inspiration reminded me of a quote.
Anything Can Insire You
Always keep your eyes open. Keep watching. Because whatever you can see can inspire you.
Grace Coddington
Always keep your eyes open. Keep watching. Because whatever you can see can inspire you. Watching that Twitch stream, keeping my eyes open to the discussion, and seeing how open everyone was inspired me. Place your eyes on something new and maybe you can be insired as well.
